Beni Haroun Dam, Wilaya de Mila, Algeria

At 120 m heigh the worlds largest gravity dam
constructed using the RCC method

The worlds largest gravity dam of 120 m heigh was constructed in the Algerian-Tunisian border area near Wilaya de Mila. The crown of the RCC dam extends over 710 m in length.
The upstream vertically designed cross-section is stepped downstream with an inclination of 1:0.8. The area of the 104 m wide outflow channel was to be constructed with smoothed concrete.
The procedure selected involved concrete being placed in layers of 300 mm. Four concreting sections were therefore required for the 1.20 m high climbing cycles. Carrying out one cycle – striking, climbing and erection – could be completed by two workmen in around five minutes. This output was easily combined with the concreting work.

The formwork systems planned by PERI helped the smooth execution of the construction work and the contractors to pour up to 160,000 m³ of concrete per month into the formwork at peak times.
