Air Traffic Control Tower, Edinburgh Airport

CB 240 access and internal platforms support
5.44m high pours using PERI RUNDFLEX

Originally the site of a First World War aerodrome and later to become RAF Turnhouse, Edinburgh Airport was officially opened in 1977 by her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. It is now Scotland''s fastest growing airport handling some 7.8 million passengers each year from its single terminal and flying to 40 destinations.

The airport''s new £10million air traffic control tower is one important element of the airport''s general development and modernisation programme.

Laing O''Rourke are developing a policy for safer systems of work with formwork and falsework suppliers with particular emphasis on eliminating risks when working at height – a philosophy shared by PERI and one which is designed into our own systems.

Not for the first time the contribution made by the PERI design team backed by on the ground technical support was acclaimed by the industry. The PERI input was heralded as critical to the successful completion on time of the overall project programme. The contractor has historically used PERI systems extensively for wall construction and for the Edinburgh Airport project the capability to construct a 6.25m diameter one-piece internal shaft platform together with the provision of CB 240 access brackets with trailing platforms was a key factor. The PERI system also offered considerable weight advantages over other systems.

PERI RUNDFLEX enabled a relatively tight radius to be achieved – 3.12m internal and 3.42m externally – at a pour height of 5.44m.

PERI formwork systems allowed the concrete core, which is approximately 46m high, to be completed in 10 full height lifts over a period of 10 weeks. This included a week for re-making the shutters, after pour 3, to adjust the height.
Not only did the RUNDFLEX circular formwork panels enable safe working at height both inside and outside the core but the CB Climbing Platforms also limited the amount of temporary works that were required.
