From conception to completion – PERI full-service for a successful construction process
BBC Scotland is currently based in several locations across Scotland with its headquarters in the heart of Glasgow''s West End. A recent study showed the existing Glasgow building to be inadequate for modern broadcasting demands and a decision was taken to relocate to Pacific Quay on the south bank of the River Clyde. The new £129.25million 5 storey concrete framed broadcasting centre has a total floor area of approximately 32,500m² and construction work, which began in August 2004 is due for completion early in 2005.
A major factor in the appointment of PERI by PJ Carey (Contractors) Ltd to design and supply suitable wall, slab and column formwork systems was a capability to deliver a singlesource solution with adequate flexibility for the formwork to suit the different floor heights.
Heights ranged from ground to mezzanine at 2.65m, ground to first floor at 6.00m and a typical floor-to-floor height of 3.85m. Another major requirement was the need to produce the maximum table size possible and this was successfully achieved with the introduction of PERI''s new MPB 24 aluminium beams.
For ease of construction and to reduce the risk of falls from height some 90% of the table tops were fabricated on a low level MP 120 trestle and then craned onto a previously made 16 or 20 leg MULTIPROP table.
The BBC Scotland project is an excellent example of how formwork and falsework technology can be adapted, through early team discussion, to suit evolving on-site needs. The use of large tables and high-load aluminium beams contributed significantly to the safe and cost-effective construction of the concrete frame structure.
