A first class result achieved using
PERI SSC jumpform system for an 87m high pylon

The 227m span steel-decked cable-stayed bridge is described as a landmark structure and a symbol of regeneration for the Sirhowy valley in South Wales.

The bridge is being constructed at a capital cost of £34 million by Costain and initial site clearance began in January 2004 with the overall project scheduled for completion in April 2006.

Twin 87m high central concrete towers dominate the landscape. The tower design required accurate setting out and close adherence to measuring tolerances by the site engineers in order to achieve the required F4 finish within a very tight programme.

The choice of PERI as formwork supplier resulted from the company''s excellent industry reputation and confidence gained at tender stage through joint development of a system that could achieve the 300mm radius at each corner and accommodate the pylons crosssection reducing at each lift.

PERI''s on-site presence was deemed an essential factor in ensuring smooth-running operations and to deal with technical modifications as they arose. The programme deadline for the completed pylons of March 2005 necessitated that weekly pour heights of 4.50m over the total height of 87m were achieved.

This included several lifts which differed in shape where the pylons meet, at a height of approximately 72m, to accommodate the cable stay chamber. It was critical that major remodelling at each lift was avoided.

In the order of 950m³ of C50 concrete, with approximately 25m³ per pour, was used in the pylons. The PERI TRIO system was used for the pylon base which was poured in two halves with a total concrete quantity of 1,300m³ (40m x 13m x 2.50m deep).

PERI TRIO formwork is being used on the project to form bridge abutments and retaining walls.

Mark Dillon, Site Agent:
”We have operated the PERI SSC jumpform system successfully on the Pont Dewi Sant bridge. On what at first seemed to be a challenging engineering project, in terms of programme and technical requirements, through combined Costain and PERI teamwork, we now have a first class result.”
