Mercedes-Benz Museum - convincing formwork technology for an extremely complicated structure.
With an impressive height of 48 metres, the museum is constructed on a 6 m high man-made elevation directly outside of the gates of the main plant in Stuttgart. The building''s concept avoids any corners and edges as its design is based on a double-helix. PERI was awarded the contract for the formwork and shoring for this structure, whose realization according to industry experts has reached the limit of what is technically feasible.
In process groups, construction procedures for the “Twist” and “Myth” segments were developed and perfected. The insights gained here found their way into the 3D construction planning which the PERI specialists used for production of the formwork elements. Their practicability was proven on the basis of mock up pours, which were up to 11 metres high and eight metres long, for both the “Twist” and “Myth” areas.
Due to the characteristics of the required shapes on site, approx. 90% of the 3D-box-outs which had to be produced were completed with elements assembled by PERI''s special formwork division. Besides this there is also a great amount of standard equipment on this site. Until the end of October 2004, around 900 truck loads of PERI equipment had been transported to the site.
