Napier Business School, Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Prefabricated formwork panels achieve Blemish free concrete
A stunning new business school at Napier University, named after John Napier, the celebrated mathematician, is being constructed in the Craiglockhart district of Edinburgh. Futuristic in design and flexible in operation the teaching and study areas, of various sizes, will be created alongside covered courtyards and informal seating areas. Two lecture theatres with seating capacities of 400 and 200 form the core of the new building.
The main theatre is one of the most striking elements of the new building, puncturing the northern glass wall and the courtyard roof with its curvaceous, ovate structure. This dramatically shaped structure is the cantilevered centerpiece of the complex and was the most technically challenging formwork aspect of the project.
The project uses a range of formwork systems from the standard PERI range including, RUNDFLEX for curved walls, MULTIPROP for all support work and pre-assembled VARIO vertical wall formwork for all the feature walls. Preassembled formwork panels, made to exacting standards, were required to achieve an unusually high-quality concrete finish for a number of feature walls. The concrete contractor, A J Clark Construction, selected PERI because of its proven track record in the supply of similar pre-fabricated formwork packages. Working under factory controlled conditions the panels were manufactured to tight tolerances and supplied to a very demanding schedule thus alleviating any potential problems on site.
As part of the total formwork design solution the Beto-film face plywood was fixed from the rear through a backing sheet to produce a blemish free, smooth, high specification finish. Intricacies of detail were important and achieved using special elliptical formwork to create a 4.00 x 2.40 m void through which students will walk to the Lecture Theatres.
The 400 seat capacity theatre required further fairfaced walls and columns, together with two technically challenging columns incorporating 400 mm and 500 mm diameter bullnoses. These columns were set at 70˚ and 80˚ respectively. Preassembly facilitated accurate construction of straight modules, curved units and the sloping columns which tapered to differing bullnoses.
The Napier University Business School project, whilst technically very demanding, is a perfect example of how architectural and civil engineering skills can be brought together to deliver an inspirational concept. The value of early discussion, however, cannot be overstated.
