Warnow Crossing, Rostock, Germany

Easy to Operate Tunnel Formwork Carriages
for Smooth Construction Progress

This tunnel under the river Warnow completed the ring road system around the city of Rostock.
The 790 m long tunnel was formed out of six segments, each of which was 120 m long and pre-cast in eight concreting sections in special dry docks. After closing the segment ends with steel doors and flooding the docks, the 22,000 tonne element was floated out and positioned on the river bed.

The construction of the tunnel parts was carried out in two concreting cycles. After the bottom slabs had been casted, the walls and top slab were concreted monolithically in one pour. The cycle lengths were between 14.20 m and 15.60 m.

The PERI formwork solution was based on using the maximum possible number of standard components. Both formwork carriages delivered were easy and simple to operate, since the folding, raising and lowering of the internal formwork could be hydraulically controlled. Moving was carried out with pulleys. The external elements, together with the top tilt formwork and working platforms, were re-positioned with one crane-lift, saving considerable time. Thus, the weekly cycle schedule was comfortably managed.

Tunnel construction was carried out using the “floating and sinking” method.
