New Terminal 3, Stuttgart Airport, Germany
Smooth Construction Progress Formwork and Scaffolding Solutions from One Source
Since the beginning of the 90s, the annual number of air passengers in and out of the Baden-Wuerttemberg state capital has almost doubled. The construction of the new Terminal 3 complex is the logical outcome to deal with this large increase and is designed to handle around four million travellers per year.
Massive beams allowed the forming of the large slab spans and provided the spatial generosity in the building itself. The contractors decided on using a PERI-only solution: horizontal TRIO elements on GT 24 lattice girders and ST 100 stacking towers provided costeffective construction of the up to 82 m long beams with work carried out at great heights.
The GT 24 girder lengths which were chosen served as the formwork bottom and formed safe working platforms on both sides. Handrail holders allowed the required guardrail safety system to be quickly mounted.
The design of the new terminal is based on the prize-winning Terminal 1 building whose steel tree-strut construction has now become the trademark of the Swabian airport.
For the assembly of the eighteen 15 m high “steel trees” with diameters of up to 26 m, the list of requirements for the complex scaffolding technique was long while the available planning period was short.
The PERI service package consisted of the planning, static calculations, development and the production of special parts, and also included the complete erection of the system until the steel construction was finished.
Non-specific scaffolding components were integrated from the PERI formwork programme. In addition, PERI organized the logistics and erected, altered and dismantled the required falsework and working scaffolds for the assembly and welding work. For this application, a PERI UP Rosett scaffolding solution was used and fully met the expectations of the client.

Guido Zeger Site Manager “Using a system solution, we could also easily handle the huge beams. The ST 100 stacking towers allowed simple adjustment to the various clearance heights and safely transferred the loads.”
Armin Edbauer Project Manager “The PERI scaffolding solution played a decisive role in realizing the project within the given deadlines.”
