Altenheim-Eschau Bridge over the Rhine

Bridging Germany and France
with PERI VARIO in Cantilevered Construction

This 457 m long bridge is part of the southern by-pass around the city of Strasbourg and connects the Strasbourg airport to the German motorway network.

Close cooperation already during the planning phase between the consortium members and PERI engineers led to a technically cost-effective solution using PERI standard systems.

Abutments and piers
Both abutments, as well as the two piers positioned in the river, were formed using VARIO girder wall formwork with a solid waling system. Adapting to the shapes, surface structures and specified tie positions as stipulated by the French architect Philippe Fraleu, the VARIO standard components combined with customized fillers produced the required results.

Superstructure
The tri-sectional main bridge (121, 205 and 131 m) consists of a pre-stressed concrete box girder and was constructed using the cantilevered launching method with C65 concrete. Four cantilever formwork units were used assembled with VARIO standard components, which only required minimum modifications. The complete internal and external formwork was mounted on the contractor''s own cantilever equipment with the help of PERI system parts.

Internal formwork
VARIO with cover plates and removable small elements for adapting to the changeable superstructure heights (4.50 to 9.00 m).

External formwork
Two vertical web elements per side, a cantilever slab connected by a rounded steel element.

From the start, the contractors could achieve a weekly casting segment of 3.50 m to 5.00 m.

    Project Manager
“Both consortium partners have worked successfully with PERI for decades. Also on this project we made very efficient progress using their systems. The fact that the formwork planning and delivery of the various PERI formwork equipment came from one source simplified our materials management and contributed considerably to the problem-free construction process.”
