Federal Chancellery, Berlin, Germany

Massive falsework and gigantic floor table constructions

Construction work on the new Federal Chancellery was already forging ahead by late 1997. It was erected to the plans of the Axel-Schultes architects not far from the Reichstag building and is one of a row of government buildings on the banks of the river Spree.

The principal building is the up to 37 m high headquarters building, which is used for reception purposes and is also the headquarters of the Federal Chancellor. The fastidious architecture of the project demanded the complete services of the contractors and the formwork supplier, PERI.

  • Multiprop
  • About 30,000 m² of assembled wall and slab formwork were planned by PERI. An extraordinary task for an unusual project.
A combined height of over 6,000 m of PD 8 and MULTIPROP towers from the PERI hire service were used for supporting the 2,500 m² inverted dome slab.
Prefabricated superstructure units, brought to the site by barges on the river Spree, were mainly assembled on the PD 8 falsework units at night.
The complicated shape was used twice, because the inverted dome slab construction was repeated four floors higher.
The falsework height was up to 18 m, designed for a concrete loading of 23 kN/m², with the soffit being partially visible in white concrete.
